What is Materiel?

Materiel is defined by the United States' Department of Defense as: `"[a]ll items necessary to equip, operate, maintain, and support military activities without distinction as to its application for administrative or combat purposes." <https://web.archive.org/web/20210429143435/https://www.jcs.mil/Portals/36/Documents/Doctrine/pubs/dictionary.pdf>`__

Data about materiel is described by three claim types:

- :ref:`materiel`: description of the item including names, classifications and other relevant fields.
- :ref:`component`: description of how materiel is composed of other materiel.
- :ref:`equipment`: defining the link between materiel and a unit.
